Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death in America.  Approximately, 1 in 3 deaths in the US are from heart disease.  During  2017, over 700,000 Americans died from CVD and every 40 seconds someone in the United States dies from the condition.  Globally, the death rate from CVD is every 2 seconds.
Amazingly, virtually all heart attacks are 100% preventable.  As Dr. Ornish first published with peer-reviewed angiogram evidence back in the late 1990’s, and wrote about in his book, Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease, a low-fat plant-based diet (consisting of no more than 10% fat) reverses heart disease and atherosclerosis.   Furthermore, these improvements occur irrespective of how severe the vascular blockages becomes.  Dr. Esselstyn, the famed cardiologist from the Cleveland Clinic, corroborated these findings during his multi-year study with nearly terminal CVD patients and subsequently wrote the book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease to summarize the research for the public.  Many other well known medical doctors such as Dr. McDougall, Dr. Fuhrman, and Dr. Barnard have also predictably experienced and written about similar effects with their patients.
In addition to direct medical evidence (consisting of angiographic, biomarker, and event-based data), epidemiological evidence further supports the potency of a low-fat plant based diet.   Cornell’s Dr. Colin Campbell, in his classic book, China Study convincingly demonstrated that heart disease is virtually unheard of in those parts of the world that consume low fat plant-based diets.  In fact, the evidence is so overwhelming, that 2 of the 3 Medicare funded programs to reverse heart disease (the Ornish plan and the Pritikin plan) both encourage their adherents to consume low-fat, oil-free, plant-based foods.
Although it is good news that heart disease can be reversed, the bad news is that maintaining a low-fat plant-based diet, consisting of no more than 10% fat, can be very difficult to do.
